В эту субботу автор с соратниками играли сценарий на 1944, англичане против немцев, наступление шло вдоль стола.
After a particular nasty affair, HM Forces can say they hold the bridge across the Odon in the face of the vicious counter attack by the jerry 10th SS Panzer Frundsberg.
First thanks to the participants for helping make this a great game/battle. The terrain looked great as well.
The scenario was this: The 2nd Argylls of the 15th Scottish Division had crossed the Odon River and had taken Gavrus, allowing in theory for 11th Armoured Division to come up and spring board forward take the infamous Hill 112. Whilst the Argylls did indeed take the village the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions had arrived from a lovely winter in Russia and were thrown into the fray to attempt to close the gaping hole in the German line from Montgomery's Operation Epsom.
The Argylls knew something was afoot, smelling German "cigarettes" and stinky blood sausage, and were dug in hoping for the best. Their goal was to hold as much of the battlefield as possible and the bridges across the Odon, and ideally the town if at all possible.
The German 10th SS was tasked with driving the Scots back across the Odon.
The British were at first successful at keeping the Germans at bay with blazing salvoes from the big artillery guns across the Odon, including some 5.5". But alas the guns were able to offer only limited support of three turns. In the meantime the British Recce units were attempting to figure out the master plan of the particular Nasty Obersturmbannführer O'Riley, who received both the Iron Cross and some unspeakable and horrible illness in Russia.
Whilst one Kampfgruppe maneuvered to the west one KG hit the town from the south. Things look bleak for the Argylls, but they had an ace up their Khaki Battle Dress, namely the battery of 17 pdr., whose very existence, though still hidden, seemed to slow down the German armor from attempting any Blitzkrieg type of rush.
Bill's infantry company supported by the 17 pdr held off a first rush of German infantry and for a time retook part of the village before succumbing to overwhelming Germans. Next their formed a quasi square of infantry to hold off the rampaging Zulus, er, Germans.
Whilst pressed as well from the south the Sherman HQ troop ambushed some recce Pumas and drove them back, while the remainder of the Shermans maneuvered themselves to stop the Sturmgeschütz attack against the village.
Darkness ended the battle before a definite resolution could be reached, though both sides have claimed victory and SBF O'Riley will no doubt be promoted to Brigadeführer for his galantry.
Bill's artillery battery will certainly earn at least a Military Medal or perhaps even a Military Cross. Alas, no Victoria Crosses were earned in the engagement.
